West Highland Way Day 1 and 2
Our introduction to the West Highland Way was on the old military roads built by the Brits to chase the Scots up into the highlands. The walk takes you through a series of small settlements also connected by road and rail. This makes it very accessible and quite busy. The proper hikers freedom camp along the way on sites that offer nothing more than some flat ground and rocks to build a fire. We're on the other team that has hot showers, packed lunches and luggage transfers. All teams are enjoying a wild landscape that we're loosely comparing to the Desert Road mixed with some Central Otago.
Day 1 was a bit short and we'd arrived by lunch time so we did a side trip up a saddle. It was a 500 metre ascent and tricky in places so it felt like a proper walk. View from the top of the saddle
They have sheep here too
