Lisbon

Our flight from Seville was delayed by three hours. The airline gave us 2 x 6 euro snack vouchers as compensation. Little was on offer in the departures area for that price but our lunch was subsidised nonetheless.

We arrived in Lisbon to a gloomy sky. Thanks Bridie for putting us on to the Bolt ride hailing app. Our transfer to the hotel was cheap and straightforward. We immediately set to exploring Lisbon by foot. The hilly topography is refreshing and the city is a bit more colourful than our previous Spanish destinations.

We've been fueled by fish. Again, I can't quite believe the number of food offerings. It feels like the main purpose of downtown Lisbon is food and drink.

An example: the Timeout food market is crazy busy

A couple of storms have passed through Lisbon causing a bit of chaos. St George's Castle was closed. We've noticed a few trees up ended, fallen roof tiles, and many abandoned umbrellas. Vicki and I have introduced the concept of wet weather trousers to Lisbon.

The downtown area we are staying in was completely rebuilt following the 1755 earthquake and is laid out in a grid with large plazas.

The areas adjacent are a tangle of narrow cobbled streets.

The Lisbon Cathedral looks down over us. We didn't visit but I was taken with it's look.

Travelling to Sintra for the day has painted a grimmer economic picture outside of the main centre, passing through a pretty unattractive cityscape. Sintra however is a fairytale destination with palaces and the like. It was a nice change. Again, some of the destinations were shut because of storm damage. The moorish castle at the top of the hill was one of these.

We visited a manor houe, Quinta da Regaleira with outrageous grounds. It could do with a bit of a Wet and Forget treatment

Vicki under a thing

We've just about wrapped up Lisbon. It's been busy. The on again off again rain has been annoying but not a show stopper.
