Singapore

Our day started just after 5:00 am. Singapore wasn't quite ready for us.  After breakfast we took our big bags to the airport and left them with the storage service. This gave us 14 hours until our flight (54 holes of golf?). We visited China town, had lunch, walked around Gardens by the Bay (in the rain), walked around the city (not in the rain) and eventually back to the airport. Singapore excels at food, shopping, tall buildings and public transport. We would definitely visit again. The locals are pretty relaxed and welcoming. It feels clean, safe, modern and a bit not-modern. Our hotel was in the Geylang area which felt non-touristic. Street markets sold cheaper everything and push bikes ruled the pavement. Fail 1. Our Wise card refused to tag off at one of the stations. The attendant just opened the gate for us as he quickly pegged us as non-locals. He said Wise cards had previous on their network. An unsolved mystery.

New York

On our second full day in New York we decided to follow some of 'The Great Saunter', a 32 mile circumnavigation of Manhattan Island. We picked on the section below where we are staying on 45th Street, moving in a clockwise direction. This was not a great choice as much of the riverbank on the lower east side is under construction which pushed us inland through mostly unattractive urban housing estates. Once we were below Brooklyn Bridge things sorted themselves out and we were able to enjoy the extensive parks just like New Yorkers. It's hot at the moment. Roughly 30 degrees celsius with a bit of humidity so the walking is harder. The following day we jumped on a train to Cold Sping, a small town north of New York (pop. est. around 2000), up the Hudson Valley. There are mountain walks accessible by foot from town so we embarked on the Bull Hill loop which is 5.5 miles with a climb of just over 400 metres. Tyndrum

Our West Highland Way walk begins in Tyndrum. We overnighted in Edinburgh so spent the afternoon having a look around. The castle is austere in comparison to some of the fancy-pants ones we have visited. Edinburgers enjoying a sunny afternoon in Princes Street Gardens, which is right downtown below the castle. The good thing about this photo is that you can't hear the bag pipe buskers. We visited an outdoor sports shop to upgrade our socks. Chatting to the assistant about our upcoming walk he put us on to a site that provides midge forecasts. The midge is Scotland's equivalent of our sandfly and seems to part of every hiking conversation. I'm packing Avon Skin So Soft, an accidental solution to the problem allegedly used by the SAS no less. The train journey to Tyndrum has us excited about the walk ahead.  This is where we start.
